Abraham Whitesides (Reedy Fork
History of Buffalo Presbyterian Churoh and Her People (Rev. s.~.Rankin) page 30~"Robert
Thompson secured two grants of 640 acres each, one on Buffalo and one on the Reedy Fork.
He lived on the Reedy Fork. He witnessed the deed of John kCKnigbt and others on North
!uffalo. On the da\1 of the Alamance battle, May 16, 1771, he went with his pastor, Dr.
Caldwell, to Governor Tryon's camp to try to effect some kind of a compromise to avoid
a battle. Dr. Caldwell returned to the Regulators to deliver his meseage, but Robert
Thompson and Robert Mateer, of the Haw River Churoh, were detained. Later when Tllomp~on ...._
started to return to his men he was shot down by Governor Tryon. (Life of Caldwell, page
153. ) His was the first blood shed for the rights of the American Colonies. Robert Thompson left two sons, Samuel and John, and a daughter, Samuel married ~argaret, daughter
of John McOlintook, Sr.; the daughter married Abram Whitesides, and their daughter married James Cannon, the grandfather of Congressman Joseph G.Cannon, of Illinois, and father of Governor Newton Cannon, of Tennessee."

Mamie McCubbins Collection
Description
An account of the resource
In 1954, the research papers of Mrs. Mamie (Mary Louisa) Gaskill McCubbins were acquired by the Rowan Public Library. Over the years, her research files have proved invaluable in genealogical researching. The History Room has made this material available online. The files are identified by surname and are often a collection of various spellings of last name or related surnames – Abbot/Abot/Abott/Ebert for example may all be in the surname folder identified as Abbott. These digitized files are searchable to a great extent, however, many are handwritten and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) does not always readily identify handwritten characters. Please search each page of a folder so that no clues are overlooked. Mrs. McCubbins utilized every scrap of paper available to her and notes can be written sideways along the margin of the pages and occasionally information about a seemingly unrelated surname will be found amongst the pages of a specific folder. Many families form intimate connections over time and research into a related surname can cast light on the history of another family – please check the Surname Index for potentially interconnected families. Mrs. McCubbins gleaned her information from county records, correspondence, maps and oral histories. The materials can often guide research to other important records that may also be available at the History Room.
