Description

Main Street Looking North, Salisbury N.C.

This image was taken in the early 1900s, prior to the streetcars.  This area near the courthouse had a shoe store, grocer, hardware, clothing, drug store, barber shop, cotton broker, and a machinery company among other businesses. The building with the flags is the V. Wallace Company, a wholesale dry goods firm.  Up the street in the middle of the square is the fountain, which was eventually moved to accommodate streetcar tracks.
