Description
An account of the resource
The 87 postcards in this project are from two collections from the Edith M. Clark History Room at the Rowan Public Library, The Miscellaneous Postcard Collection, MSS 9034 and The Johnny Young Postcard Collection, MSS 9908. The postcards in the project are those in some way connected with Theo Buerbaum, who was a photographer and bookstore owner in Salisbury, North Carolina from 1880-1926. Most of the postcards are from photographs he took, but others are ones that bear the imprint of his bookstore in some way. Included with the images are short histories researched by our staff of the events, places, or people depicted in the postcard. Our collection includes the images of Theo Buerbaum’s postcards, but this is by no means all that he produced. We are always looking out for images we do not have and we will happily take other donations.

Interior of Machine Shop
Description
An account of the resource

The Back Shop structure was built in 1905 and served as the major overhaul facility for steam locomotives where they were disassembled with the aid of a crane. Parts were re-machined on Lathes and milling machines before the locomotives were reassembled. In its heyday, two to three locomotives per week were completely rebuilt at the Back Shop. At 64 feet tall, 596 feet long, and 150 feet wide, it was the largest commercial building in North Carolina of the time. Spencer Shops could perform needed repair or overhaul to locomotives as well as freight and passenger cars.

The North Carolina Transportation Museum is renovating the Back Shop to be uses as a location to demonstrate North Carolina’s transportation history. It will eventually house trains, trucks, automobiles and aircraft as well as classrooms and meeting spaces. Renovations have been partially completed.

Southern R. R. Depot
Description
An account of the resource

The Southern Railroad Depot in Salisbury, built in 1907, was designed by noted architect Frank Milburn and is considered an outstanding example of Spanish mission-style architecture. The building spans the length of two city blocks with a dark red brick base and tan brick body. A three and one-half story tower enhanced by projecting gargoyles is centrally featured, with a Spanish tile roof covering all.

Large canopies sheltered travelers from rain and the sun. The building also housed the offices of the stationmaster, the telegrapher, and other staff. At the time it was built, the station reflected the prevailing social attitudes, providing separate White and Colored entrances into the General Waiting Room. There was also a separation of the sexes; the women’s rest room was called a Ladies Parlor and a Smoking Room was made available just for men.

No longer in use as a depot, the building was restored in 1993 and part of it is used for offices. In addition, the waiting room is rented out for wedding receptions and other special occasions. The building was listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Travels with Balfour Pink
Description
An account of the resource
A few years ago, Rowan Public Library was given a collection of glass slides from a local family. These magic lantern slides documented various paving and curbing projects done throughout the United States in the early 1900s. Many skilled stone workers came to Rowan County from Great Britain in the early 20th Century to work in the granite industry including the Kirchin family. Both father and son worked as stone cutters for the Harris Granite Quarries Company, world-renown for Balfour Pink “The Granite Eternal.” This granite was used for many projects all over the United States and Europe, particularly as paving stones and memorials. As society moved from horse drawn carts and carriages to motorcars, a smooth and even surface was felt to be imperative. Many of the glass slides offer a glimpse of American street scenes in the first quarter of the Twentieth Century.
