Over the years, her research files have proved invaluable in genealogical researching. The History Room has made this material available online. The files are identified by surname and are often a collection of various spellings of last name or related surnames – Abbot/Abot/Abott/Ebert for example may all be in the surname folder identified as Abbott. These digitized files are searchable to a great extent, however, many are handwritten and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) does not always readily identify handwritten characters. Please search each page of a folder so that no clues are overlooked. Mrs. McCubbins utilized every scrap of paper available to her and notes can be written sideways along the margin of the pages and occasionally information about a seemingly unrelated surname will be found amongst the pages of a specific folder. Many families form intimate connections over time and research into a related surname can cast light on the history of another family – please check the Surname Index for potentially interconnected families. Mrs. McCubbins gleaned her information from county records, correspondence, maps and oral histories. The materials can often guide research to other important records that may also be available at the History Room.</text>

Clark History Room at the Rowan Public Library, The Miscellaneous Postcard Collection, MSS 9034 and The Johnny Young Postcard Collection, MSS 9908. The postcards in the project are those in some way connected with Theo Buerbaum, who was a photographer and bookstore owner in Salisbury, North Carolina from 1880-1926. Most of the postcards are from photographs he took, but others are ones that bear the imprint of his bookstore in some way. Included with the images are short histories researched by our staff of the events, places, or people depicted in the postcard. Our collection includes the images of Theo Buerbaum’s postcards, but this is by no means all that he produced. We are always looking out for images we do not have and we will happily take other donations. </text>

The second Meroney Theatre opened in 1905 on South Main Street. The first Meroney Opera House had been owned by brothers T. J. and P.P Meroney, who purchased a building in disrepair called the Market House in 1873. The brothers repaired the building and fitted it in “theatrical style, to be used as a place of amusement.” The theatre was sold in 1892 to Dr. Leroy and Miss Lena Meroney. By 1904, it was clear to them that the building needed too much work, so a new site was purchased and work began building the new Meroney Theatre. Joseph Fels, a friend of the Meroney’s helped to finance the building. A few years later when the Empire Hotel was remodeled helped the actors to move to and from the theatre.

Such notables as Sarah Bernhardt, Lillian Russell, John Phillip Sousa, and William Howard Taft appeared on the Meroney’s stage. The Old Hickory Club, a gentleman’s social club and the Masons have shared this building. In 1910, the theatre was sold to Clay Grubb. The Bijou, the first motion picture theatre in Salisbury, opened in one of the retail spaces on the Meroney’s first floor in 1907 and a new trend had begun. The theatre has at times been known as the Grubb Theatre, the Colonial, the Strand, the State, the Center, and the Fotosho. In 1995, it was refurbished and again became the Meroney Theatre, home to the Piedmont Players.
