Mamie McCubbins Collection
Description
An account of the resource
In 1954, the research papers of Mrs. Mamie (Mary Louisa) Gaskill McCubbins were acquired by the Rowan Public Library. Over the years, her research files have proved invaluable in genealogical researching. The History Room has made this material available online. The files are identified by surname and are often a collection of various spellings of last name or related surnames – Abbot/Abot/Abott/Ebert for example may all be in the surname folder identified as Abbott. These digitized files are searchable to a great extent, however, many are handwritten and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) does not always readily identify handwritten characters. Please search each page of a folder so that no clues are overlooked. Mrs. McCubbins utilized every scrap of paper available to her and notes can be written sideways along the margin of the pages and occasionally information about a seemingly unrelated surname will be found amongst the pages of a specific folder. Many families form intimate connections over time and research into a related surname can cast light on the history of another family – please check the Surname Index for potentially interconnected families. Mrs. McCubbins gleaned her information from county records, correspondence, maps and oral histories. The materials can often guide research to other important records that may also be available at the History Room.

Travels with Balfour Pink
Description
An account of the resource
A few years ago, Rowan Public Library was given a collection of glass slides from a local family. These magic lantern slides documented various paving and curbing projects done throughout the United States in the early 1900s. Many skilled stone workers came to Rowan County from Great Britain in the early 20th Century to work in the granite industry including the Kirchin family. Both father and son worked as stone cutters for the Harris Granite Quarries Company, world-renown for Balfour Pink “The Granite Eternal.” This granite was used for many projects all over the United States and Europe, particularly as paving stones and memorials. As society moved from horse drawn carts and carriages to motorcars, a smooth and even surface was felt to be imperative. Many of the glass slides offer a glimpse of American street scenes in the first quarter of the Twentieth Century.

Description
An account of the resource

A referral letter given to Reginald Kirchin from his employer, The Harris Granite Quarries Company.

The letter, dated May 3, 1922 at Salisbury, NC reads as follows:

To Whom it May Concern.

Reginald Kirchin started work in the employ of The Harris Granite Quarries Co. as an Apprentice Granite Cutter on Monday morning March 31, 1919.

On account of scarcity of work this pla(n)t suspended operations on March 25, 1922.

He has lost eight months on account of plant being idle at various times, otherwise his time would have expired at about the time of plant shutting down.

Mr. Kirchin has always taken a deep interest in his chosen occupation and has made good in every way.

The high quality of work turned out and the exteme hardness of Balfour Pink Granite, put a high test on a man's ability, and Mr. Kirchin has made good on all work assigned to him.

He is steady and reliable and you will make no mistake in giving him employment.

Very truly yours
