Genealogical Society

Objectives

The Genealogical Society of Rowan County was organized in February of 1987, and we received our charter in 1988. Membership is open to all who are interested in genealogical or historical research and the objectives of the society which are:

-- to generate interest in and raise the standards of genealogical research and compilation in Rowan County by means of educational programs, workshops, and the publication and preservation of material of genealogical and historical value;

-- to instill in members and county citizens a pride in their family's genealogical data and encourage and instruct members in the practice of genealogical research;

-- to serve, through its publications and otherwise, as a medium of exchange of genealogical information;

-- to promote the collection, preservation, and utilization of manuscripts, documents, and other materials of genealogical value, particularly in the Edith M. Clark History Room, which contains all archival material of the Society;

-- to publish such books, newsletters, journals, charts, papers, or lists deemed useful to the public.

Society Publications

A genealogical journal is published by the Society on a quarterly basis. The journal contains information regarding genealogical and historical primary source records found in Rowan County. An index to the journal is published annually. In addition to the journal, a newsletter is published at the discretion of the editor and the officers of the Society.

Terms of Membership

All memberships run the calendar year. Back issues of the journal for the current calendar year will be sent to those who join prior to 1 November. Fees received after 1 November will be entered for the following year unless the secretary is notified otherwise.

Dues and Fees

Annual membership is $20 per person or institution and includes a subscription to the Genealogical Society of Rowan County Journal and the Society's newsletter. Queries are free to members.

Family membership is $25 for two or more family members, at the same address and receiving one Journal or newsletter.

Sponsors pay $50 to the Society. Sponsors are entitled to all benefits of the Society as well as extra appreciation from its members.

Queries

Queries are published free for members. They should be typewritten or printed legibly and include the name and include the name and address of the person to whom the replies should be sent. These queries will be subject to editing by the staff of the Journal.

Meetings

The Society will meet at Rowan Public Library except when tours of local points of interest are planned. Meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm.

Change of Address

The Society should be notified of changes of address at least six weeks in advance of the journal mailing dates (March, June, September, December). BEGINNING 2022 THE JOURNAL WILL ONLY BE DELIVERED ELECTRONICALLY.   Please update your email address by clicking the email link below.
