Receipt books, day books, and other records from the Gold Hill Mining Company of Gold Hill, North Carolina showing the day to day financial transactions of the mine. These records include receipts of items purchased, the person selling the items, and the signatures of those involved in the purchase. Also listed are the names of various miners and the amount they were paid. Especially of interest are those lists showing African American workers and slave owners who were paid for the services of their slaves who worked in the mines.
These items appear to have been stored in poor environmental conditions, possibly an outbuilding of some kind. They have been damaged by insects and moisture, and for preservation purposes some of the bindings and blank sheets were removed and discarded in November of 1996 and January of 1997. These books also appear to have been fumigated at some point after arriving in Rowan Public Library's custody. The one item that had the most damage (the receipt book for 1857) was taken apart sheet by sheet. Great care was taken in keeping the pages in order. They have been numbered.
